Hi, I am Dr. Alexandra Schlager, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist (PSY 35961) in San Diego. I specialize in individual therapy with adults, focusing on the treatment of anxiety, depression, stress resulting from life transitions, and challenges in interpersonal effectiveness. I am a dynamic and compassionate psychologist with a broad knowledge base in the field of psychology. I started my career in the challenging environment of inpatient mental health, where I gained invaluable experience in crisis intervention and the treatment of severe mental disorders. My time in inpatient settings allowed me to sharpen my skills in diagnosing and treating a wide range of psychological disorders. My dedication to improving the lives of those facing mental health challenges became apparent as I experienced empathy and a deep commitment to the well-being of my clients.
I see therapy as a collaborative process. Together, we identify patterns that may be keeping you stuck, develop healthier coping strategies, and build on your existing strengths to foster lasting change. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, or major life transitions, I aim to help you feel more grounded, empowered, and capable of creating the life you want.
I have worked with adolescents, adults, and older adults as they work through life's challenges. I am client-centered with a trauma-informed lens, often leaving clients feeling heard, validated, and empowered to continue reaching their goals.
As someone who has worked as a clinician embedded in a law enforcement agency, I am acutely aware of the realities of first responders and the impact the work can have on the individual and their relationships.
I earned my master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute, where my training emphasized depth-oriented and integrative psychotherapy alongside evidence-based treatment.
My clinical background includes experience across a variety of settings and treatment modalities. I have worked as a behavior interventionist providing ABA-based support, as well as a play therapist supporting children and families through developmentally informed, relational interventions. I have also practiced as a Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapist, integrating preparation, dosing-session support, and integration work within an ethical and client-centered framework. Additionally, I participated as a clinician in the MAPS Phase III clinical trial for MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD, an experience that deepened my understanding of trauma treatment, research-informed care, and the careful integration of emerging therapeutic modalities. Earlier in my career, I worked as an academic coach providing specialized support to children and adolescents with ADHD and learning differences. I have also facilitated therapeutic support groups and led introduction meetings at Cancer Support Community Redondo Beach, further strengthening my group facilitation skills and my commitment to accessible, compassionate community-based care.
I am a person centered with a passion to be of service. Very creative in curating treatment plans designed with you in mind. Solution focused on healing with diverse modalities.
