Michael M. Zavala, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC is a Texas and New Mexico based Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner focused on holistic integrative psychiatry.
I help adults experiencing obesity, anxiety, depression, trauma/PTSD, and burnout/moral injury rediscover their sense of excitement and engagement with work, loved ones, and life by offering a specialized approach for those motivated to uncover the root cause of their symptoms, with medication as an option, NOT the only option.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC), and trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), an evidenced-based therapy used in treating PTSD, trauma, depression, anxiety, and other distressing life events. Finding a therapist is an extremely personal experience. I work to ensure you are comfortable with our therapeutic relationship, and if not, I offer referrals to other therapists who may be a better fit.
I provide compassionate, confidential psychiatric care designed to help you feel supported and understood. Each treatment plan is personalized, using evidence-based approaches tailored to your unique needs and goals. My goal is to create a safe, judgment-free space where we can work together to manage challenges such as anxiety, depression, mood changes, or sleep issues. Appointments are available virtually for your convenience.
I am a licensed clinical psychologist with a solid background in evidence-based care, combined with genuine compassion and a commitment to helping my patients overcome challenges and improve their quality of life. Over the past eight years, I have worked with children, teens, and adults on various mental health issues. My research experience covers topics like disordered eating, self-esteem, and media influences, which helps me understand how external factors affect mental health. Most importantly, I see therapy as a partnership built on trust, respect, and your unique strengths and experiences.
I earned my Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University New England, along with Master degrees in Clinical Psychology and Media Studies, and a B.A. in Psychology from UCLA. My experience includes APA-accredited placements at respected institutions, including the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center and the Northern Arizona VA Health Care System. I have also done training in assessments, counseling, and residential treatments for children and families. I currently run a private practice at Inspired Minds Psychological Services PLLC and support Veterans through the Department of Veterans Affairs, which is deeply meaningful to me. I am licensed to practice in Florida and Texas.

I am a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner that is interested in providing quality, compassionate, and comprehensive mental health care services through psychotherapy and psychopharmacology. I come from a strong nursing background, with over 10 years of experience working with clients experiencing changes to their mental and physical health in both outpatient and inpatient settings. My educational background includes a Master of Science from the University of Texas Health Science Center of Houston, Cizik School of Nursing and a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Texas Tech University Health Science Center.
I’m an individual and family therapist specializing in adolescents, adults, and parents coping with anxiety, depression, PMDD, relationship issues, and life transitions including infertility, pregnancy, the postpartum experience, and new parenthood. For families, I specialize in supporting parents and teens or adult children experiencing conflict, communication issues, or disconnection. Together, we’ll unpack the feelings, histories, and inner narratives that affect our relationships and work toward repairing harm, building understanding, and developing healthier ways of relating.
I have dedicated three decades of my life to providing counseling services. My therapeutic approach is Existential Phenomenological, with a strong emphasis on Jungian psychology. I was introduced to Existential Phenomenology while attending the University of Dallas, where I completed my undergraduate degree in psychology. I obtained my master's in psychology at the University of West Georgia. Then, after several years, I returned to school to obtain a doctorate in Clinical Psychology. Additional studies include play therapy, art therapy, SandPlay, EMDR, family studies, psychophysiology, and neuropsychology. My eclectic tools range from expressive art therapies to cognitive behavioral techniques. In addition, I have been blessed with training and work opportunities that have sharpened my clinical skills. My experience includes being a therapist for outpatient clinics, private practice, and hospital settings (inpatient, day hospital/partial hospital, intensive outpatient, and mobile assessment team).
